ASTM A333 Standard Overview

The ASTM A333 specification covers seamless and welded steel pipes for low-temperature service and other applications where notch toughness is required.

The standard includes both ERW (electric resistance welded) and seamless types, covering both carbon steel and alloy steel materials.

*For Grade 1 and 6, each reduction of 0.01% C below 0.30%, an increase of 0.05 % Mn above 1.06 % would be permitted to a max. of 1.35%.
*For Grade 6, the limit for columbium may be increased up to 0.05 % on heat analysis and 0.06 % on product analysis.
*Generally, the carbon equivalent C.E = [C + Mn/6 + (Cr + Mo + V)/5 + (Ni + Cu)/15] shall not exceed 0.43% by heat analysis.

Grades Available Under ASTM A333

ASTM A333 includes 9 grades: Grade 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11.
Each grade differs in chemical composition and mechanical properties, allowing buyers to select the right material for their specific project requirements.

Heat Treatment Process

All pipes manufactured to ASTM A333 (except Grades 8 and 11) are heat treated to ensure stable microstructure and performance. Common methods include:

  • Normalizing at temperatures above 815 °C, then air cooling or furnace cooling.
  • Controlled hot working in the range of 845–945 °C, followed by suitable tempering.
  • Quenching and tempering for Grades 1, 6, and 10 to improve toughness.
  • Special treatments such as quenched & tempered or double normalized & tempered for Grade 8, and annealing plus normalizing for Grade 11.

These treatments ensure durability and consistent performance in harsh operating conditions.
