How to Install Black Iron Pipes?
We’ve recently added a variety of black iron pipes and fittings to our website. Be sure to check out our black pipe fittings catalog! Through this experience, we’ve discovered that many customers are unfamiliar with this high-quality material. To put it simply, black iron piping is an excellent choice for gas systems. It is durable, simple to install, resistant to corrosion, and creates a secure, gas-tight seal. The black coating is particularly useful in preventing rust.
Black iron pipe (often mistakenly called steel pipe) can be used in numerous ways. It’s most commonly used to transport natural gas and oil from the source to the end-user. Black iron is compatible with both gas and water systems, and it’s particularly favored for fire sprinkler installations due to its ability to withstand high temperatures. Black iron pipe fittings are designed to manage the pressures and potential risks involved in running gas lines.
Although black iron pipe was once a go-to material for plumbing, its use has diminished with the rise of copper, CPVC, and PEX. However, it is still a preferred option for oil systems for two primary reasons: its strength and ease of assembly.
Much like PVC, black malleable iron pipes are connected through compounds rather than welding. Despite the name, black iron is actually made from a low-grade mild steel, which provides better corrosion resistance than traditional cast iron.

Features of Black Iron Pipe
When discussing black iron pipe and its fittings, it’s essential to understand its key features. This is crucial when working with plumbing systems in your home.

Black Iron Piping Pressure Ratings
The term “black iron” generally refers to black-coated steel, but various types of black iron pipe are available. Unfortunately, there are no universal standards that apply to all black iron pipes. However, they are all made to handle natural and propane gas, typically kept below 60 psi. When installed properly, black iron pipes can handle pressures up to 150 psi or more, ensuring a safe gas system.
Steps to Install Black Iron Pipes
A key benefit of black iron piping is its malleability, which allows for easy threading. Threaded pipes are simple to install, as they screw into fittings without the need for soldering. However, it’s important to use Teflon sealing tape to ensure an airtight seal, as with any threaded system. Thankfully, pipe sealants and tapes are affordable and easy to apply.
Assembling a black iron gas system requires some skill and proper preparation. Sometimes, the pipes are pre-threaded to a specific length, but often they will need to be cut and threaded manually. To do this, secure the pipe in a vise, cut it to the desired length with a pipe cutter, and then use a pipe threader to create threads. Always apply thread-cutting oil to prevent damage to the threads. When joining sections of pipe, be sure to use a sealant to fill in the gaps between the threads. The two most common types of sealants are thread tape and pipe coating.
How to Use Pipe Dope?
Pipe dope (or “joint compound”) is a liquid sealant that fills the gaps between threads for a secure seal. It remains flexible, so connections can be disassembled for repairs if necessary. However, it can be messy, though the thick consistency prevents it from dripping excessively.
Pipe dope typically comes with a brush or applicator for easy application. Use it to cover the male threads evenly. It’s not suitable for internal threads. Once the male threads are covered, screw the pipe and fittings together, tightening them with a pipe wrench. Some experts recommend applying both thread tape and pipe dope for added security—this is worth trying if you can’t decide which works best for you!
While we focus on black iron pipe here, fittings play an equally important role in any black pipe system. At Jizhong, we offer a wide selection of black extensible fittings and couplings (including pre-cut and pre-threaded pipe sections) at unbeatable prices.
