Steam Fittings – General Information (Jizhong Cast Iron Fittings for Steam)

When working with high-pressure steam systems, safety depends greatly on the correct selection and installation of fittings and hoses. Using the right cast iron fittings for steam is essential for reliable and secure operation. Follow these basic principles:

  • Always use fittings and clamps designed for steam service — make sure they operate within their rated pressure and temperature limits.
  • Do not crimp ferrules to attach fittings to rubber steam hoses. Instead, use specially designed steam clamps that bolt together on the hose.
  • Select fittings and clamps carefully. The clamps must match the hose’s actual outer diameter with precision.
  • Install fittings and clamps correctly, following the proper technical instructions.
  • Inspect regularly. Check fittings, clamps, bolt tightness, and hose material near the fitting to ensure continued safety and reliability.

Is steel or copper better for steam applications?

There is a bias against using copper piping in steam applications. The reason is that steam moving through the system at a high speed, coupled with constant temperature fluctuations between cycles, can cause the pipe to expand and contract. This torsion on soldered joints can cause them to leak.

However, ProPress copper fittings are better able to absorb the torsion and can even act as swing joints in the system. So ProPress copper fittings are a better option for steam systems than soldered copper fittings.

That said, we do recommend cast iron fittings as they are stronger.

cast iron fittings for steam and clamps are available in materials such as steel, zinc-plated cast iron, stainless steel, and brass. These fittings feature a serrated hose tail with a locking collar, over which the clamp interlocks. The bolted clamp design allows re-tightening after extended use when the rubber hose material may slightly deform over time.

Jizhong strongly advises against using permanently crimped ferrules to attach fittings to rubber steam hoses. Permanent crimping prevents re-tightening during service life, and as the rubber loses elasticity, it may result in steam leakage or even a dangerous rupture.

Crimping with ferrules may only be considered after thorough validation testing under steam conditions, confirming the safety and specifying precise usage limits. For rubber steam hose applications, Jizhong recommends using properly matched cast iron fittings for steam with bolted clamps for maximum safety and durability.
