Types of CS Elbows based on Length and Radius

CS elbows are categorized into two main types based on the distance over which the fluid flow changes direction, measured from the centerline of one end to the opposite face. This measurement is referred to as the “Center-to-Face” distance and corresponds to the bending radius of the cs elbow.

When the bending radius is equal to the pipe diameter (Center-to-Face dimension of 1.0 X diameter), it is known as a Short Radius CS Elbow (SR CS Elbow). These are typically used in low-pressure and low-flow applications or in compact spaces where installation clearance is limited. If the bending radius is 1.5 times the pipe diameter (Center-to-Face dimension of 1.5 X diameter), it is classified as a Long Radius CS Elbow (LR CS Elbow), which is ideal for high-pressure and high-flow systems.

CS elbows are further divided based on their radius of curvature into long radius and short radius types. A long radius CS elbow has a curvature radius of 1.5 times the pipe’s outer diameter (R = 1.5D), while a short radius CS elbow has a curvature radius equal to the pipe’s outer diameter (R = D). Here, “D” represents the pipe’s diameter, and “R” is the curvature radius.

In standard applications, the choice of cs elbow radius depends on operational requirements. To minimize resistance loss or reduce wear, a cs elbow with a larger bending radius may be used (although technically, it may no longer be referred to as an elbow). Conversely, when space constraints exist, a short radius cs elbow is the preferred choice.
